The best things in life are free. That was what people had always told Dallas when they caught him in one of his moods. Then again Dallas pretty much was nothing but a walking mood, a ticking time bomb waiting to go off, a hazard to himself and everyone around him. That's why he was best left to himself. Riding, fixing his bike or his car, drinking . . . Dallas was a pretty solitary man, a lone wolf. The best things in life came free? That was where he had to disagree. Money bought drugs and alcohol to quiet the demons. Money bought his bike and his Chevy, and gas to put into the two. Money bought cigarettes and tattoos and the company of fine women. But that part that made him the happiest about money was that most of the money he got to spend on all of his happiness was the governments. Irony. Maybe the best things in life were free.
He sucked on a cigarette on the patio of the bar. People talked and he grew irritated with the sounds of the drunken laughter and stupid conversations. He grit his teeth and clenched the bottle of beer in his hands tighter. He had known it wasn't a good idea to come to a bar in Miami. They were always crowded. This little hole in the wall by his work wasn't as packed as most bars in the city but there were still too many people for his loner taste. He looked at the sunset through his sunglasses and tried to remind himself to relax. Drink. Smoke. He fidgeted with the rings on his hands. Tonight would probably end with cops showing up and him in handcuffs . . . And not in the good way.
